Following Malaya’s 1957 independence from Britain and its subsequent merger into modern-day Malaysia six years later, Chin carried on his exile-based battle for communist rule over the new state until the signing of a peace treaty in 1989. The Malaysian government at this time firmly refused to permit him to return, and this restriction has been extended to his residual remains.

Chin passed away on the 50th anniversary of Malaysia’s founding in a hospital in Bangkok.
