In his capacity as Defense Secretary, he advocated for “clear blue water” policies, or conservative measures that kept the Conservatives and Labour Party apart.

During the 1997 general election, Portillo unexpectedly lost the Conservative seat of Enfield Southgate, which had previously been safe. As a result, the term “Portillo moment” was created.

After winning a seat back in the Commons in the Kensington and Chelsea by-election in 1999, Portillo became the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer and returned to the front bench.

After competing for the party leadership in 2001, he ultimately finished third behind Kenneth Clarke and Iain Duncan Smith. At the general election of 2005, he announced his retirement from the House of Commons and from active politics.

Portillo has followed his media interests since leaving politics, hosting and taking part in a variety of radio and television shows.

Because of his love of steam trains, Portillo created the BBC documentary series Great British Railway Journeys, which debuted in 2008. Throughout the series, he explores the British railway networks while consulting several Bradshaw’s Guide editions.

Because of the show’s popularity, Portillo presented a series about foreign railway networks. He started hosting the political program Portillo for the British news network GB News in 2022.

After being appointed as Chief Secretary to the Treasury in 1992, Michael Portillo took the oath of office and became a member of the Privy Council of the United Kingdom, bearing the honorific title “The Right Honourable” for life.

Richmond, The American International University in London, granted him an Honorary Doctorate in 2003. In 2018, the Royal Scottish Geographical Society (FRSGS) appointed Portillo as a fellow.

The Freedom of the City of London has been bestowed on him. On September 29, 2019, he was bestowed with the distinction of spearheading the yearly Sheep Drive across London Bridge.
