High Court Sentences 38-yr-old Woman To Prison For Selling Marijuana

A Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna has convicted and sentenced a 38-year-old woman, Felicia Raymond, to three years imprisonment for dealing in 4.5 kilogrammes of marijuana commonly known as weed.

Justice Mohammed Garba delivered judgement on Friday, March 31 after she pleaded guilty to the charge filed against her by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The NDLEA prosecutor, T J Atserhegh, told the court that Raymond was arrested with the illegal substance in the Ungwan Rimi area of Kaduna state on February 13 while acting on information.

Following a tip off regarding suspicious activities in the area, Atserhegh said operatives swung into action and apprehended the drug dealer with 4.5kg of marijuana, which is an offence punishable under Section 19 of the NDLEA Act, Cap. N30, LFN, 2004.

NAN reports that the defence lawyer, Francis Dauda, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy as his client was a first time offender who is remorseful.

Dauda also urged the court to consider a fine option instead of a custodial sentence.

However, Justice Garba sentenced the convict with an option of N100,000 fine.
