Tate Makgoe, officially known as Pule Herbert Isak Makgoe was a South African politician. He was first elected to the Free State Provincial Legislature as an African National Congress representative in the 1994 election.

As a member of the African National Congress, Tate Makgoe served in different positions of the Executive Council. He served as the MEC for Finance twice (1994–1996; 2005–2009), the MEC for Tourism and Environmental Affairs (1997–1999).

Tate Makgoe was the MEC for Agriculture (1999–2001) and also the MEC for Public Safety, Security and Liaison (2004–2005). He became the legislature’s chair of chairs between 2001 and 2004. In May 2009, he was named Education MEC by then-premier, Ace Magashule and was retained in 2014.

In March 2018, after Sisi Ntombela was elected premier, she maintained Makgoe in his post (Education MEC) and remained in the positi on following the 2019 election.

Tate Makgoe died in a car crash on the N1, outside Winburg, in the early hours of Sunday, March 5 2023. He died at tha age of 59 alongside his bodyguard, Warrant Officer Vuyo Mdi

However, their driver Pule Nkopane survived and was rushed to Winburg Hospital, Sello Dithebe, spokesperson for Free State Premier Mxolisi Dukwana, said on Sunday.

According to Mxolisi Dukwana, Tate Makgoe had been driving back from a meeting in Gauteng and was headed to Free State for a morning church service.

“We only know that he had a meeting in Johannesburg and was travelling back because he had an appointment. He was going to be attending a church service in Heidedal (in Bloemfontein) around 09:00 today. That is why he insisted [on] driving in the early hours for him to be here,” he said.
