Stuart Dew Career

In 1997, Port Adelaide’s first season in the AFL, Dew made his AFL debut. But he didn’t get regular selection until the 1998 season.

Dew developed into a key member of the Power, as shown by the 2004 campaign, when he scored 31 goals and contributed to the team’s championship triumph.

Dew participated in all 24 games and was a running half-back during the 2005 season. Dew announced his retirement from the AFL on November 6, 2006.

Dew declared his intention to come out of retirement to play a final season with Central Districts despite not playing football at any level in 2007.

He was persuaded to enter the 2007 AFL National Draft by Alastair Clarkson, his former assistant coach at Port Adelaide and current head coach at Hawthorn, though, and Hawthorn chose him with its third-round pick (No. 45 overall).

He made his Hawthorn debut in round one of 2008 against Melbourne before suffering a hamstring injury in his next game against Fremantle.

He suffered a hamstring injury again later in the season, but by the time the finals rolled around, he was well and playing well.

When the Grand Final’s outcome was still in doubt in the third quarter, Stuart paid back the confidence placed in him with a stunning run, scoring two goals and assisting on another two.

Dew was only able to play in 11 games in 2009 due to a number of soft tissue ailments, and at the conclusion of the year, he announced his retirement from the AFL.

Dew accepted a job as an assistant coach with the Sydney Swans in 2010 when he retired as a player. He stayed with Sydney until October 4 of that year.

On October 4, 2017, Dew was introduced as the senior coach of the Gold Coast Suns. Rodney Eade resigned from his position as senior coach in 2017 with three games remaining, and Dew took over for him. Rodney Eade had been the caretaker senior coach for the Gold Coast Suns.

Dew’s inaugural campaign as senior coach The Suns finished the 2018 season in 17th place on the standings with four wins and 18 losses, which did not reflect an improvement in their on-field performance.

The club’s ladder standing further declined in the 2019 campaign, as they finished with three victories and 19 defeats to take home the wooden spoon in last place.

With five victories, one tie, and 11 defeats in the 2020 campaign, the Suns improved to claim 14th place on the ladder. The Suns placed 16th on the ladder in the 2021 season.

Following a 33-point defeat to second-place Port Adelaide in Round 17, 2023, Dew was fired as the senior coach of the Gold Coast Suns on July 11, 2023.

For the balance of the 2023 season, Dew was succeeded as interim senior coach by assistant coach Steven King. After leading the Gold Coast Suns for little under 6 seasons, Stuart Dew is the team’s all-time longest-tenured coach.
