How Did the KanColle Mutsuki Illustrator Die?

On October 5, 2022, Souta Kusada passed away. She was the illustrator of various Kantai Collection (KanColle) ship girls, such as Mutsuki and HMAS Perth. Her spouse, who broke the news on her Twitter account on October 10, 2022, is the only survivor. Before the announcement, the surviving family staged a vigil and funeral service.

Dear fans, I am Sota Kusada’s husband. It may be sudden, but there is something I would like to tell you on behalf of the person himself. It is very sad, but Sota Kusada departed for heaven on October 5th of his own free will (he passed the wake and farewell ceremony without incident)

After 14 years of friendship, the couple got hitched in January 2020. Kusada’s spouse stated in the tweet thread that she “went to heaven by her own decision” on October 5, 2022. He observed incomplete artwork on her computer screen and a calendar with no canceled appointments. But since there were no testaments, he concluded she acted rashly.

Who is Souta Kusada?

Souta Kusada is most known for creating five of the twelve Mutsuki-class destroyer ship girls in KanColle. And a PC browser game developed by Kadokawa Games that helped popularise the idea of anthropomorphizing historical warships.

The first four ships—Mutsuki, Kisaragi, Yayoi, and Uzuki—as well as the sixth ship, Minazuki, were on the roster.

The 2015 anime season of KanColle featured Mutsuki as one of its key characters.

Later, Kusada created the Australian light cruiser, HMAS Perth, for KanColle.

On Mikoto Inunakiyama, the Osaka representative of the hot spring anthropomorphization series Onsen Musume, Kusada worked on the design outside of KanColle.

Additionally, she produced VTuber designs for Mia Mizugame and Sakaizumi Riri in addition to herself. In Japan, Android smartphones and PC browsers can access the Kantai Collection, also known as Fleet Girls Collection and KanColle.

A follow-up season of the anime adaption will have its Japanese premiere in November 2022; it was broadcast in 2015 and is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
