Who was Shawn Snider?

Snider began as a volunteer Alamo firefighter as a youngster, first as a mechanic and subsequently as a fire marshal. In 1991, he joined the Edinburg Fire Department, and in 1999, he was promoted to fire chief.

He has held positions as a search and rescue task force leader, a fire school instructor, and a training coordinator in the past.

Chief Snider has greatly benefited his community as chair of the Hidalgo County Fire Chiefs Association, as the head of Texas Task Force I Type 3 in the Rio Grande Valley, and as an instructor at the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service Municipal Fire School.

He has also served as the emergency management coordinator for the City of Edinburg during his tenure as fire chief and from December 2011 to July 2012, he was also the acting city manager.

Chief Snider, who is well-liked by his colleagues, was chosen president of the State Firefighters’ and Fire Marshals’ Association in 2009 and actively participated in advancing the association’s legislative agenda that year.

He has also served in other high-profile leadership roles, including as the coordinator of training for the Rio Grande Valley Firefighters’ and Fire Marshals’ Association and as a member of the State Firefighters’ and Fire Marshals’ Association Certification Board.
