Longtime Edinburg Fire Chief Shawn Snider passed away on Tuesday morning at the age of 58, the city announced on social media.

Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr., state Representative Terry Canales, the city of Weslaco, and other public figures, as well as citizens, companies, and other organizations, were mourning the death of Chief Snider on Tuesday.

The city of Edinburg announced this sad news on social media by saying, “Rest in peace, Fire Chief Shawn Snider. Your courage, leadership, and dedication to serving our community will never be forgotten”

Who was Shawn Snider?

Snider began as a volunteer Alamo firefighter as a youngster, first as a mechanic and subsequently as a fire marshal. In 1991, he joined the Edinburg Fire Department, and in 1999, he was promoted to fire chief.

He has held positions as a search and rescue task force leader, a fire school instructor, and a training coordinator in the past.

Chief Snider has greatly benefited his community as chair of the Hidalgo County Fire Chiefs Association, as the head of Texas Task Force I Type 3 in the Rio Grande Valley, and as an instructor at the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service Municipal Fire School.

He has also served as the emergency management coordinator for the City of Edinburg during his tenure as fire chief and from December 2011 to July 2012, he was also the acting city manager.

Chief Snider, who is well-liked by his colleagues, was chosen president of the State Firefighters' and Fire Marshals' Association in 2009 and actively participated in advancing the association's legislative agenda that year.

He has also served in other high-profile leadership roles, including as the coordinator of training for the Rio Grande Valley Firefighters' and Fire Marshals' Association and as a member of the State Firefighters' and Fire Marshals' Association Certification Board.

Chief Snider is renowned for consistently putting the needs of his firefighters and his duties as a public servant ahead of his own needs. He has also awed others with his unwavering commitment to his faith and family.

Shawn Snider, the Longtime fire Chief passed away. The city said in a statement that Snider passed away on Monday after “a courageous battle with cancer.”

“Chief Snider was an exemplary public servant who dedicated his life to protecting the people of Edinburg. He was a true leader who inspired his team to be the best they could be, and his legacy will always live on in the Edinburg Fire Department,” Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. said in the statement.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Chief Snider's family and his other family at the Edinburg Fire Department during this difficult time.”

He was survived by his wife, Edna Snider, and daughter, Sarah. Tributes flooded social media after his demise news broke out.
