Sandra Zaiter’s health was declining during the past week and on Saturday she was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where she was in intensive care with a diagnosis of pneumonia. This Sunday afternoon, she passed away.
The presenter of children’s programs had been confined to a hospital in San Juan for pneumonia.
The information was confirmed by José Vega, who gives life to Clown Remi, a long-time friend of Zaiter.
“Strong hard news for all of us that Sandra was our teacher par excellence. Her heart, her mercy with people and her passion with children is something that this country will miss,” Vega said in an interview with Televicentro (WAPA TV ).
Vega told in a broken voice about the friendship they had for many years.
“In the face of my pain and my sorrows, I would pick up the phone and speak for them because they always inspired me with peace,” he said ruefully.
Zaiter, who was also a composer, singer, entertainer and teacher, had an outstanding career on television that spanned three decades, mainly as a writer, producer and host of the program ”Telecómicas”, alongside Dagmar and Lou Briel.
In 1975 she suffered an accident that left her paraplegic, after colliding with a rock in an accident at sea.
During her life, she received several distinctions, such as an honorary doctorate from the Interamerican University and the public service medal from the Felisa Rincón de Gautier Foundation, among others.
Similarly, a television studio on Telemundo bears her name.

Contrary to all predictions, not two years had passed when Sandra Zaiter returned to television, with the same smile and sweetness that captivated the attention of the little ones.

Thousands of Puerto Ricans learned multiplication tables and spelling by singing the records made by Sandra Zaiter, aimed at achieving it.

In the early 2000s, she retired from television but remained active, giving talks and motivating others.
In 2009, she published her experiences, under the title ‘Seagull in flight’, drawing laughter with her way of describing the worst blows she received in life.
