RUGA Suspension: Northern Governors Tell Herdsmen, Others What To Do

The Northern Governors’ Forum has called on all stakeholders, especially in the North, to remain calm in the wake of the suspension of Rural Grazing Area (RUGA ) settlement project by the Buhari administration.

Naijaparry understands that RUGA Settlement is a rural project aimed at ensuring animal farmers/herders stay in a designated place provided with basic amenities such as schools, hospitals, road networks, vet clinics, markets among others.

But many Nigerians kicked against the initiative.

As a result, the government, on Wednesday, July 3, announced that it had suspended the plan till further notice.

Ebonyi governor David Umahi disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents after a meeting of the NEC Committee on Farmers/Herders Crisis.

“We are aware that the president has suspended the implementation of `Ruga’ Programme initiated and being implemented by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources,” Umahi said.

“This is because it is not consistent with the NEC and federal government’s approved NLTP.”

The suspension did not go down well with the Coalition of Northern Groups as it gave President Muhammadu
Buhari a 30-day ultimatum to implement the plan.

Reacting to this development, Chairman of the forum of northern governors, Governor Simon Lalong urged all stakeholders to be democratic in their views while allowing government to handle the matter.

He said that the forum was already reaching out to major stakeholders particularly in the North after receiving the position of the leadership of the Coalition of Northern Groups.

“We have acknowledged the varied responses that have been coming in throughout the hours after the announcement of the suspension which we see as part of the beauty of democracy,” Lalong, who is the governor of Plateau state, said.

“This allows citizens to participate in shaping and moderating the functions of government with regards to matters of public interest.

“Meanwhile we urge all stakeholders and all shades of interested parties, especially from the North, to remain calm and air their views democratically and decently while allowing the government chance to handle the matter.”

The governor assured that at the end of the day, what was coming out of the suspension would turn out to be more beneficial and in the best interest of the whole nation.
