Robbie Coltrane Cause of Death: What Happened, How Did Hagrid Actor Die?

The death of Robbie Coltrane, a Scottish actor, comedian and writer.

Robbie is best known as Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter film series, and as Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky in the James Bond films, GoldenEye and The World Is Not Enough.

Robbie Coltrane Cause of Death

Robbie Coltrane died on October 14th, 2022 but his cause of death is not public knowledge. Deadline reports that he “had been in ill health for the past two years,” and died in Larbert, Scotland, in a hospital close to his home.

In a statement, his agent Belinda Wright confirmed the actor died in hospital near Falkirk in Scotland.

She described Coltrane as a “unique talent”, adding his role as Hagrid “brought joy to children and adults alike all over the world”.

“For me personally I shall remember him as an abidingly loyal client. As well as being a wonderful actor, he was forensically intelligent, brilliantly witty and after 40 years of being proud to be called his agent, I shall miss him.

“He is survived by his sister Annie Rae, his children Spencer and Alice and their mother Rhona Gemmell. They would like to thank the medical staff at Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert for their care and diplomacy.

“Please respect Robbie’s family’s privacy at this distressing time.”

The Hagrid actor was pictured in a wheelchair in 2019, unable to walk. Sources said at the time he had been in “constant pain for years” and was awaiting much needed knee replacement surgery.

It came after osteoarthritis had completely destroyed his joints. “I was fighting pain 24 hours a day when I was in National Treasure and Great Expectations,” he said.

“I had no cartilage in my knee. It was bone on bone.” At the time, a source commented: “It’s left him unable to walk without any assistance and he’s been given a wheelchair while he waits to have a special surgical procedure in America to repair his joint.

“It’s hugely frustrating for him but he’s really hoping to be back on his feet after getting the operation.” The star added: “It was just horrible. The relief from that pain since the operation and being able to sleep has changed my life.”

In his later years, he appeared less frequently in film and television, but returned to be interviewed for HBO’s Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return To Hogwarts – where he spoke of how his legacy as Hagrid would live long beyond him. Speaking on the special, he said: “The legacy of the movies is that my children’s generation will show it to their children, so you could be watching it in 50 years’ time easy.

“I’ll not be here sadly…but Hagrid will.”

Robbie did at the age of 72 years old.
