At his high school’s talent event, Layi first skulked about a microphone to make people laugh in JSS2.

“I signed up for stand-up comedy and formed The Emerald Star, a drama group I led until SS3.” The highlight of the night was our performance during the talent show. It was during those times that I realized I was meant for this. I felt extremely lively, very me on stage and during rehearsals.”

Layi learned the basics of comedy most prominently and naturally possible: observing the frog for an extended period.

His mother, who attends the Redeemed Christian Church of God, brought Christian heritage to his acts as he grew up. Layi parodies the hammy acting and deus-ex-machina resolutions of the Mount Zion films that entertained practically every Nigerian Christian home from the 1980s to the early 2000s, morality soap operas written, directed, and acted in by any number of the legendary Bamiloye family.

In another skit, Layi imagines what it would be like to work for a Nigerian boss with Jesus’ supernatural abilities using the POV style popular in web humor. He has a way with words, likely due to his reading of “some Soyinka” and “a chunk of Adichie.”

Layi also performs physical comedy, such as wearing the absurdly oversized cloak you’d expect to see on those peripatetic Jehovah’s Witness missionaries who are rich in heaven but broke on earth.

Layi’s comedy rests primarily on his command of the English language and his acting abilities, the former lending his skits a literary air and adding intricacy while reminding you his time in Nollywood is only two train stations away.

He describes himself as an introvert—”a gift and a curse”, he calls it—and his comedy reflects the sonic minimalism typical of an introvert’s private life: There are no exuberant sound effects, no canned whoops of “Funke!” or “Apostle will hear of this”.
