How Did Billy Guyton Die?
Billy Guyton, a well-known New Zealand rugby union player passed away suddenly on May 15, 2023.
Throughout his playing career, Guyton played halfback for the Blues, Crusaders, Hurricanes, Mori All Blacks, Tasman, and North Otago.
He most recently served as the Tasman women’s team’s assistant coach during the Farah Palmer Cup. His passing was announced by Tasman Rugby in a social media post. The union released a following statement saying,
“It is with great sadness to hear of the passing of Billy Guyton (a 52-game Mako player, and recent coach of our FPC Mako team)”
“Billy was a much-loved member of our whole Tasman Rugby Union team and had a positive impact on those he played alongside and coached.”
“Billy has been a major contributor to the development of women’s rugby across our Tasman region. Our condolences and Aroha are extended to Billy’s whāanau, friends, and colleagues during this sad time.”, the union said in a statement.
Blues also shared a tribute to him saying,
“We are shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Billy Guyton. He was a talented rugby player, who made 24 appearances for the Blues between 2016-2017.
We cannot imagine the heartache his family and friends must be feeling at this difficult time. To everyone who knew Billy, we send them our sincere sympathy.”
Who was Billy Guyton?
Billy started his provincial career with North Otago after being born and raised in South Canterbury. He played 52 times for Tasman between 2013 and 2017 after representing the province from 2010 to 2012.
Guyton played rugby union for New Zealand and was a halfback for the regional team Tasman. Guyton, a member of the Ngpuhi, Ngti Pikiao, and Ngti Raukawa iwi, was selected for the Mori All Blacks team in October 2016 for their end-of-year tour to the Northern Hemisphere.
He also played for New Zealand Heartland XV at Fullback and Wing. He played for North Otago in the Heartland championship for three years, making 29 games for the province.
Before the ITM Cup of the 2013 season, he relocated to the north to join the Tasman Mako. Guyton established himself as Tasman’s starting halfback in 2013, as the team went on to win the ITM Cup champion division with a 26-25 triumph over Hawke’s Bay.
Tasman Mako was subsequently promoted to the Premiership Division of the ITM Cup. Guyton signed with the Hurricanes for the 2014 season of Super Rugby.
He played for the Hurricanes in a very small number of games during the 2014 Super Rugby season. Guyton was initially cut loose for the 2015 campaign as a result, but the Crusaders later signed him as a replacement for the remainder of the super rugby campaign after Willi Heinz suffered a season-ending injury.
He signed a deal with the Blues, his third super rugby team in three years, after another season with minimal action with the Crusaders. He played in Blues squad from 2016 to 2017.
Billy was chosen to play against Irish club Munster as part of the Mori All Blacks’ 2016 tour of the northern hemisphere. Additionally, he was a substitute against the English team Harlequins. Due to concussion symptoms, he was forced to retire in 2018.
Guyton was hired by the women’s provincial squad as an assistant coach, according to a Tasman union announcement from the previous year. Additionally, he had won the senior women’s club competition with the Marist team.

Former Blues halfback Billy has died suddenly at the age of 33 on May 15, 2023. However, his cause of death was not revealed yet.
Some unconfirmed sources says that he committed suicide. However, It’s unknown if it was a suicide or an accident. The circumstances surrounding his death was not known. Tributes flooded social media after his demise news broke out.
