Gary Robert Rossington (born December 4, 1951) was an American musician and songwriter. He was the last original member of Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, in which he played lead and rhythm guitar.

Gary Rossington was also a founding member of the Rossington Collins Band, along with former bandmate Allen Collins.
He was part of the Lynyrd Skynyrd band members inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.
Rossington contributed to many of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s most iconic songs, including ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ and ‘Free Bird’ among others.
He survived a 1977 plane crash that killed band members R onnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines, and a road manager, just three days after the release of their fifth studio album, ‘Street Survivors,’ according to the band’s website.

Gary Rossington died on Sunday, March 5, 2023, at the age of 71. The band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, announced on their official Facebook page on Sunday evening.
“It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness that we have to advise, that we lost our brother, friend, family member, songwriter, and guitarist, Gary Rossington, today,” their statement said.
No cause of death was given. However, the guitarist had battled a number of heart problems, including an emergency heart surgery in 2021 during the band’s Big Wheels Keep on Turnin’ Tour.
Until his death in 2023, he still played with Lynyrd Skynyrd. With the deaths of keyboardist Billy Powell (2009) and Larry Junstrom (2019), he was the last surviving original member of the band.
