First-Ever Vaccine Against Malaria, Approved

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has approved the world’s first-ever vaccine against malaria.

According to ECONOMIC TIMES, the fight against malaria which has been on for decades with the use of preventive measures could cease as a result of the production of a vaccine against malaria.

ECONOMIC TIMES reports that the RTS,S vaccine is produced by the British Pharmaceutical Giant (GSK).

Although it has just been approved by the World Health Organisation, reports show that the vaccine has proven to be effective for six years now. Information Guide Nigeria

WHO just approved it after the success of pilot programmes in Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi. The vaccine will be given to countries with a high incidence of malaria. Jamb Results

However, the new vaccine is not a fix-all solution. Though it is 40% effective against one strain – the deadliest one – of malaria. This means it can prevent 4 death in four in 10 cases of malaria and three in 10 severe cases.

ECONOMIC TIMES reports that the reason this happens is because there are over 100 variants of the malaria parasite and this means that researchers had to focus on one variant and curb it to the best of their abilities.
