In his final season, he led the Golden Eagles to the school’s first arrival in the College World Series.

Corky, who was born on March 15th, 1954, went to Hattiesburg High School and was a catcher who earned three varsity baseball letters.

Palmer took over as the starting catcher for the Golden Eagles as a freshman during his time as a collegiate player for the Southern Miss squad.

At Lee High School in Columbus, Mississippi, he took his first head coaching position after rising through the prep coaching ranks.

Palmer achieved quick success, winning three Little 10 Conference championships in the first three seasons of 1979.

After attending Columbia High School, Corky won the South State championship in 1983.

He served as an assistant coach at his alma mater in 1985 before accepting the position of head coach at Meridian Community College in 1987.

Palmer played a key role in three Juco World Series there, earning a final score of 409-160.

Before the 1998 season, the head position at the Southern Miss squad became available, and Corky immediately set about reviving the organization.

In 1999, the Golden Eagles made their third appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the history of the program.

The coach then led Southern Miss to 7 straight NCAA regionals from 2003 to 2009, winning the regular-season and tournament Conference USA championships in 2003.
