Colin Allred Career

On May 4, 2006, Allred was signed by the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent after the 2006 NFL Draft. August 29 saw his waiver, but on January 26, 2007, he resigned.

During final cuts on September 1, Allred was waived once more, and on September 2, he joined with the practice squad. On December 15, 2007, he was added to the active roster, and on December 16, 2007, he made his NFL regular season debut.

Between 2007 and 2010, Allred played in 32 games and racked up 46 tackles in his four seasons with the Titans. Before the 2011 season, he was a free agent, but he chose not to sign with another team.

Following his time playing football, Allred went to law school. He served as a special assistant in the Office of General Counsel of the Department of Housing and Urban Development under then-Secretary Julian Castro during the Obama administration after earning his J.D. from the UC Berkeley School of Law in 2014.

Allred then went on to work as an attorney at the Perkins Coie law firm, where he represented clients that included advocacy groups and national and state political candidates, as well as litigating cases pertaining to voting rights.

Allred declared on April 21, 2017, that he would run against Republican incumbent Pete Sessions in 2018. Allred won the Democratic primary by a margin of 20 points over two other former Obama administration officials, although she did not receive 50% of the vote.

With 69.5% of the vote, Allred defeated Lewisville entrepreneur Lillian Salerno in the runoff election on May 22.

In the general election, Allred faced Sessions. Despite Sessions’ reelection with no opposition from a major party, this seat was seen as a swing one as of November 2016, when Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton received slightly more votes than Republican nominee Donald Trump. Allred identified as a centrist Democrat.

Allred was elected to represent Texas’ 32nd district in the House of Representatives on November 6, 2018. Sessions had been a member of Congress since 1997 and had represented the 32nd district since its establishment in 2003, therefore his victory was seen as a shock.

Allred was elected as the district’s second representative and its first Democrat. Having previously served in the adjacent 5th district, Sessions moved to the 32nd once it appeared that redistricting had made the 5th less Republican.

Given how predominantly Republican this region had been, a large portion of what is now the 32nd had not had a Democratic representative represent it since 1968, when it was a part of the adjacent 3rd district. Along with Anthony Gonzalez, Allred was one of the two former NFL players to win a congressional seat in that year.

Along with fellow Obama administration alumnus Haley Stevens, Allred was named co-president of the Democratic freshmen of the 116th Congress in November 2018.

In the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, Allred supported former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro, a fellow Texan and his former boss, in February 2019. Following Castro’s withdrawal, Allred supported Joe Biden.

Allred cast a vote in favor of both articles of impeachment against President Donald J. Trump on December 18, 2019. During Trump’s second impeachment in January 2021, he too voted in favor of it.

Allred requested more than $241 million in earmarks for his district in 2021, the majority of which went toward upgrades at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. Allred has always voted in favor of President Joe Biden as of 2022.

Throughout the 117th United States Congress (2021–2022), Allred’s votes on the House floor were in line with the administration’s positions.

Allred has declared his intention to use a “pragmatic approach to reforming our broken immigration system,” stressing the importance of utilizing modern technologies to “secure our border and our ports of entry”. He was against sending troops to the southern border in 2019.

Allred voted in favor of supporting Israel after the Israeli government was attacked by Hamas in 2023. Allred abstained from voting in favor of H.Con.Res. 21, which ordered President Joe Biden to withdraw American forces from Syria within 180 days, in 2023.

Allred declared his candidacy for the US Senate in 2024 on May 3, 2023, against Ted Cruz, the incumbent Republican.
