Bill Gates Sr was born in Bremerton, Washington, in 1925. His parents were Lillian Elizabeth Rice (1891-1966) and William Henry Gates Jr. (1891-1969), the latter of whom was the son of William Henry Gates, a Dawson Gold Rush prospector and owner of a furniture store (not to be confused with Bill Gates, the frontiersman). In 1943, he earned his high school diploma in Bremerton.
During World War II, Gates spent three years in the US Army. He then used the G.I. Bill to attend the University of Washington, where he graduated in 1950 with a J.D. and a B.A. in 1949, respectively. He joined the Chi Psi fraternity at the University of Washington.

On July 5, 1929, Mary Ann Maxwell was born in Seattle, Washington. She was the daughter of banker James Willard Maxwell (Nebraska, 1901–1960) and Adele Thompson, whom he wed somewhere about 1927. (c. 1903–1987, probably born in Enumclaw, Washington).
James Willard Maxwell (1864–1951), her paternal grandpa, served as president of the National City Bank in Seattle from 1911 to 1929 and as a director of the Seattle office of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. He died in 1951.
