Chris Smith played defensive end for the National Football League (NFL) in American football. The Jacksonville Jaguars selected him in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draught. Smith also participated in games with the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals. At Arkansas, he played collegiate football. Smith studied at Mount Ulla, North Carolina’s West Rowan High School. He recorded 16.5 sacks and 98 tackles as a senior.

Smith participated in six games as a true freshman in 2010, making three tackles. He participated in 13 games with three starts as a sophomore in 2011. He recorded 31 stops and 3.5 sacks. He started each of the 12 games he played in as a junior in 2012, compiling 52 tackles and 9.5 sacks. He had 37 tackles and 8.5 sacks in 12 games as a senior in 2013. Smith was traded by the Jacksonville Jaguars to the Cincinnati Bengals on April 11, 2017, in exchange for a 2018 conditional draught selection. Smith was hired to improve a Bengals defense that had 19th-most sacks in the league the previous year. His career-high 26 tackles and three sacks came as he was active in all 16 games.

On December 12, 2020, he was added to the active roster.

Smith agreed to a one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens on July 27, 2021. He was reinstated to the practice squad the next day after being discharged on August 31, 2021.

On October 19, 2021, he was freed. Smith joined the Houston Texans’ practice squad on September 3, 2021.

On December 23, 2021, he received a promotion to the active roster. On March 9, 2023, Smith signed a contract with the Seattle Sea Dragons of the XFL.
