Luther Ronzoni Vandross Jr. known simply as Luther Vandross was born on April 20, 1951 at Believe Hospital, in the Kips Bay neighborhood of Manhattan, New York. He was the fourth child of Mary Ida Vandross, a nurse and Luther Vandross Sr., an upholsterer and singer.

Luther Vandross grew up in Alfred E. Smith Houses public housing development in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Getting his own phonograph at age 3, he taught himself to play the piano by ear.

When he was eight years old, his father died of diabetes, a disease that took the lives of Luther’s siblings decades later.

Vandross attended William Howard Taft High School in Bronx, graduating in 1969. Later, she went to Western Michigan University for a year and half semester before dropping out to pursue a career in music.

While he was still in high school, he founded the first Patti LaBelle fan club, acting as president. Same time, he became part of Shades of Jade, who once played at the Apollo Theatre. In his beginner days in show business, he had several appearances at the Apollo’s famous amateur night.

Vandross also became a member of a theatre workshop, Listen My Brother, he was involved in the singles “Only Love Can Make a Better World” and “Listen My Brother”. The group performed in front of tens of thousands at the Harlem Cultural Festival in late August 1969.

Vandross worked as a backing vocalist in the 1970s, and appeared on albums by artists such as Roberta Flack, Donny Hathaway, Todd Rundgren, Judy Collins, Chaka Khan, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, David Bowie, Ben E. King, Stevie Wonder, and Donna Summer.

He later became a lead singer of the group Change, which released its Gold-certified debut album, The Glow of Love, in 1980 on Warner/RFC Records. After Vandross left the group, he was signed to Epic Records as a solo artist and released his debut solo album, Never Too Much, in 1981.

In 2003, he wrote the song “Dance with My Father” and dedicated it to his deceased father; the title was based on his childhood memories. Some of Luther Vandross’s hit songs include “Never Too Much”, “Here and Now”, “Any Love”, “Power of Love/Love Power”, “I Can Make It Better” and “For You to Love”.
