WCQ 2026: Peseiro Speaks on NFF Sacking Him After 1-1 Draw With Lesotho

The head coach of the Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro, has said he cannot be sacked by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) following a 1-1 draw with Lesotho in a 2026 World Cup qualifier.

The three-time African champions went behind to a team ranked 153rd in the world, with Motlomelo Mkhwanazi scoring with their first shot on target.

However, Semi Ajayi’s powerful header rescued a point for Nigeria in the 67th minute.

During his post-match press conference, Peseiro was asked if the NFF should decide to terminate his contract based on the result.

He replied: “Why should I be sacked? Let me explain the performance.

“We created many opportunities to score. Our opponent only had two shots and scored from one of them.

“I am sad of course and a bit disappointed also. But my team tried to get the maximum points. I am sad because of the result but about the performance, Lesotho stayed behind all through for 90 minutes. They only came forward two or three times.”

The result leaves Nigeria with one point in the group alongside Lesotho, Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

The Super Eagles face Zimbabwe on Sunday, November 19, at the Huye Stadium, Butare.
