Later, O’Brien worked for the Australian Ricegrowers’ Cooperative and Accenture, where he spent more than ten years in various roles, including Beijing-based Director of Growth and Strategy for the Asia Pacific and Emerging Markets. Upon his return to Australia, he was appointed as the managing director of Barton Deakin’s Queensland office. Ted O’Brien & Associates, his own consulting business, was founded by him in 2014.
From 2005 until 2007, O’Brien presided over the Australian Republican Movement. The organization moved its headquarters from Sydney to Canberra during his tenure. According to reports, he would “focus their Canberra lobbying on Coalition MPs, who are essential to any political move to revisit the question of a republic,” along with the national executive.
In addition, O’Brien was a member of the Queensland Catholic Education Advisory Board and the chairman of the Ronald McDonald House Charities chapter in South-East Queensland. In the Division of Brisbane, O’Brien lost to Arch Bevis, the leader of the Australian Labor Party (ALP), in his maiden attempt to run for parliament in the 2007 federal election. “Time for Ted” was his campaign slogan.
From 2011 to 2013, O’Brien presided over the Liberal National Party Futures Committee. He defeated former national rugby coach John Connolly to win the LNP preselection for the Division of Fairfax in November 2012. In the 2013 federal election, Fairfax was challenged by a well-known figure: mining tycoon Clive Palmer, who ran against Fairfax as head of his Palmer United Party. Palmer won the two-candidate preferred vote over O’Brien by 53 votes after a recount.
O’Brien won LNP preselection for Fairfax once more in May 2015. Palmer eventually decided to leave federal politics, even though it was first anticipated that he would run for reelection in the same seat. In the succeeding 2016 federal election, O’Brien won Fairfax back for the LNP.
O’Brien has held several committee positions in the House of Representatives, such as chair of the Trade Sub-Committee, member of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Trade, and chair of the Standing Committee on Environment and Energy, which he assumed in July 2019.
He was proposed in 2019 to serve as the Morrison government’s representative on the Olympic Candidature Leadership Group, which is in charge of South-East Queensland’s potential bid to host the Summer Olympics in 2032. After the Coalition lost the 2022 federal election, O’Brien was appointed to Peter Dutton’s shadow cabinet, where he oversaw energy and climate change.
O’Brien supports the use of nuclear energy. He oversaw a parliamentary investigation into nuclear energy in 2019. Citing precedents with New Zealand and Singapore, O’Brien urged Australia to negotiate a free-trade agreement with Taiwan in September 2020. O’Brien lacks allegiance to any side.

He has served as the chairman of the Australian Republican Movement, the chairman of the Ronald McDonald House Charities SEQ advisory board, a member of the Queensland Catholic Education advisory board, and the founder and chairman of the local non-profit Generation Innovation, which assists youth in launching their own businesses.
Ted received his education at Nudgee College, where he served as School Captain. Later, he attended the University of Queensland, where he was St. Leo’s College College President. After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Politics from the University of Queensland, he was awarded the Asia Pacific Fellowship by the Commonwealth Government, which enabled him to pursue Chinese Mandarin studies at the National Taiwan Normal University.
Afterwards, he graduated from the London School of Economics with a master’s degree in economics and the University of Melbourne with a master’s degree in international business with first class honours.
