Who was Tom Verlaine?

Tom Verlaine was an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter.

He started learning the piano at a young age but moved to the saxophone in middle school after listening to a Stan Getz record. Verlaine was initially unimpressed by the guitar’s function in both jazz and rock music, but he was motivated to pick up the guitar after hearing the Rolling Stones’ “19th Nervous Breakdown” in his adolescence. From that point on, he engaged in a lengthy period of experimentation to advance his distinctive style.

Verlaine later turned to jazz artist Miles Davis’ electric-period works for inspiration, especially the Japanese LPs Agharta (1975) and Dark Magus (1977), which he was able to import. Verlaine was drawn to writing and poetry at a young age as well. At the boarding school Sanford School, where both of them were students, he made friends with Richard Hell (Richard Meyers), a future bandmate and punk legend. They soon realised that their love of poetry and music was similar.

The Neon Boys

After one unsuccessful effort, Verlaine (together with Hell) was able to leave school and relocate to New York City. The French symbolist poet Paul Verlaine was then referenced in his stage name. He is cited as saying that choosing this name was a strategy to distance himself from his past and was influenced by Bob Dylan’s name change. He and Hell enlisted Billy Ficca as their drummer to become the Neon Boys.

After failing to find a second guitarist despite Dee Dee Ramone and Chris Stein’s auditions, The Neon Boys immediately broke up. A few months later, they regrouped as Television, recruited Richard Lloyd as their new guitarist, and started performing at important punk venues like CBGB and Max’s Kansas City. The band’s first single was released in 1975 when Fred Smith replaced Hell after Verlaine expelled him for his unstable playing and behavior.

When New York’s punk culture was just starting to take off, Verlaine dated poet and musician Patti Smith. Before dissolving in July 1978, Television recorded two albums, Marquee Moon and Adventure, to praise and respectable sales. A successful 1980s solo career for Verlaine was launched with the quick release of his self-titled solo album. As a result of the enthusiastic response his art had got in England and around Europe, he decided to settle down there for a brief time.

Songs and Other Things, Verlaine’s first brand-new album in many years, was released in 2006.
