Todd Muller entered Parliament at the 2014 general election. He was elected as the MP for the Bay of Plenty electorate and has remained its MP for over seven years.

For his first six years in Parliament, National was in government, and Muller served as the chairperson of the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Select Committee.

He became the leader of the National Party in May 2020 after successfully challenging then-leader Simon Bridges. However, his mental health suffered, including suffering panic attacks, and he resigned from the leadership after 53 days.
