10 Popular Institution Student Slang (Check No 7 Is So Funny)

Back in the days, the use of some slang words was very popular among secondary school students, they still are.

These slangs formed parts of the students’ daily conversations and some of them even became useful lingo on the streets.

The origins of some of these slangs are largely unknown. Even though, some of them like ”Gbagaun” sounds like a Yoruba word.

Below are some of the popular slangs we learnt in secondary school back in the days.

1) Efiko/Efiwe– (n) Brilliant students are known as Efiko or Efiwe. John is an Efiko, he doesn’t like to be disturbed when he’s studying in the library. These two terms also apply to nerds and geeks.

2) Yab- (v) Literally, yab means to make fun of someone. If you yab him, he will yab you back. This word can be traced back to the 80s when the art of dissing politicians was known as yabis, a word associated with Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

3) Gbagaun (n) To make a grammatical blunder. The Biology teacher too dey gbagaun. This slang is the Yoruba word for the sound of a bell.

4) Dub (v) To copy someone’s work in an exam or test. It is a form of malpractice that involves copying someone’s homework, test or exam word for word. If you plan to dub your friend, you might be disappointed. The slang originates from the VHS era of dubbing movies.

5) Ababio- (n) This slang was very common among science students. The slang is used to refer to their Chemistry textbook-New School Chemistry authored by Osei Yaw Ababio. I am going to buy my Ababio next week.

6) Expo– (n) This is used to refer to leaked exam questions. We saw the expo of the maths exam before we wrote it. Most likely derived from the word exposed.

7) FFO – For Food Only. This is an acronym for students who are always eating and always begging for food. This guy is an FFO, always eating in the class.

8) Garium Sulphate (n) This simply refers to Garri which is a very common food among students. I want to drink Garium Sulphate with groundnut.

9) NFA- No future ambition. This slang is a derogatory term for students who do not have future plans.

10) Fashi – (v) to forget, don’t let something or someone bother you. Bros, just fashi this matter. We don’t need to discuss it again.
