Who was Serge Lebrasse?

On June 25, 1930, in Rose Hill, Serge was born. He is the oldest of four siblings. When he lost his father, he was just 9 years old. During his elementary education, he attended St. Enfant Jesus. His mother was the main source of income for the family after his father passed away, so he had to work as a seamstress to help provide for their necessities.

Due to the polio outbreak on the island, Serge had to quit attending school when he was 14 years old. He then began working in the textile industry. He was diagnosed with a heart problem during that time, which caused him to spend three months in bed.

He submitted a covert application for enlistment in the British Army at the age of 18, or more precisely in 1948. He was welcomed quite quickly, and he soon left for three years of World War II in Egypt. After three years, he returned to Mauritius and began working as a teacher in several schools from 1952 until 1969.

In 1954, he wed his lovely wife, and four children were born as a result of their union. He was ill again after that and was forced to leave his position as a teacher.

After meeting Philippe Ossan, he resumed his music career. This encouraged him to train as a music instructor. Even though sega was regarded as a crude kind of music at the time, he began creating songs despite this. His debut song, “Madame Eugene,” which he initially believed would not be successful, turned out to be successful.

Together with Alain Permal and Cyril Labonne, he sang the song on the first anniversary of independence. With all of this popularity and expertise, Serge overtook Ti Frere as the most well-known singer. In 2000, he received the City of Beau-Bassin Rose-Hill Medal. Queen Margaret and Queen Elizabeth II also greeted him.

In the hotel circuit, Serge Lebrasse also sang the songs “sega tipik” and “modern sega.” The football fan progressively established himself. Due to songs like “Madame Eugene,” “Moris mo ti pei,” “Sega Carol,” “Bal bossesse,” and “Mo pa oule,” he has established himself as a crucial segatier.

He was a multi-instrumentalist who played the saxophone and clarinet. Serge Lebrasse was the first person to be honoured in the music industry in 2018 during the first National Award Ceremony.

In addition, the segatier has a whole exhibit in his Plaisance, Rose-Hill house devoted to his awards. One of his home’s rooms is decorated with mementos from his singing career.
