Senator Bassey’s house burnt down over COVID-19 palliatives

An irate mob in Calabar has burnt down the residence of Gershom Bassey.

The attackers struck on Saturday morning after the senator was accused of hoarding supplies intended for residents during the coronavirus pandemic.

The senator’s house was razed, according to witnesses and a video seen by Peoples Gazette. The Cross River South Senatorial District lawmaker appeared to be the latest victim of mob violence that has targeted warehouses believed to be storing palliatives.

On Friday evening, a warehouse was broken into in Calabar, throwing the city in chaos. There have been reports of similar invasions of warehouses holding coronavirus supplies in Lagos, Osun and Kwara.

The looters accused politicians of hoarding the donated supplies with intention to resell them for personal financial gains. Officials have denied the claim in Osun, saying those managing the looted warehouse in Ede were expecting approval to distribute content before it was broken into.
