Salvatore Leonard Bando, a former professional baseball third baseman who played for the Kansas City and Oakland Athletics (1966–76) and Milwaukee Brewers, was born on February 13, 1944, in Cleveland, Ohio (1977–81). He used his right hand to throw and bat. He participated in college baseball at Arizona State under Bobby Winkles’ guidance.

Bando, a four-time All-Star, averaged 90 runs batted in and 23 home runs over the course of eight years. Bando placed second, third, and fourth in the voting for the American League (AL) Most Valuable Player Award from 1971 through 1974 while sometimes being eclipsed by his contemporaneous, Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson. With the Milwaukee Brewers, he finished his playing career.

Bando participated in track and field, basketball, football, and baseball while a student at Warrensville Heights High School. He played college baseball for the Arizona State Sun Devils under coach Bobby Winkles while he was a student at Arizona State University. He was selected as the College World Series Most Outstanding Player in 1965 and played for the College World Series title team.

In the sixth round of the 1965 MLB draft, the Kansas City Athletics of Major League Baseball (MLB) picked Bando. For the Athletics, he debuted in the MLB in 1966. On May 30, 1969, manager Hank Bauer appointed Bando team captain. In the 1969 MLB All-Star Game, he was selected as the American League’s starting third baseman.

Bando was selected to three straight MLB All-Star Games (1972-1974) and three times led the team in runs batted in (RBIs) during the “Swingin’ A’s” period, which spanned from 1971 to 1975. Along with Brooks Robinson, he was the second third baseman in the American League to hit 200 home runs in his career.

He retired among the top three players at his position in terms of games played (5th, 1,896), assists (6th, 3,720), and double plays (7th, 345). Bando played 2,019 games over the course of a 16-year career, batting 254 with 242 home runs and 1,039 RBIs.

Bando was a free agent following the 1976 season. He committed to a $1.5 million, five-year deal with the Milwaukee Brewers. He declared that the 1981 season would be his last during spring training.
