A provincial governor in the central Philippines and five others have been shot dead by unknown gunmen in the latest attack against local politicians.
Police said six suspects carrying rifles and dressed in uniforms similar to those worn by the armed services entered the governor’s home in Pamplona town and opened fire.
Roel Degamo, governor of Negros Oriental province, and five others were killed in the shooting, his widow said.
Roel Degamo Cause of Death
On March 4, 2023 at approximately 9:36 a.m., Degamo was shot several times by unidentified men in an attack at his residence in Pamplona, Negros Oriental. According to Police Regional Office (PRO)-Central Visayas, he was distributing aid to local beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) program when the attack happened. He was rushed to Silliman University Medical Center in Dumaguete, where he was pronounced dead at 11:41 a.m., as confirmed by his wife, Pamplona Mayor Janice Degamo. He was 56. Five other people were also killed in the shooting.

Roel Ragay Degamo (born April 29, 1966) was a Filipino politician who was the governor of the province of Negros Oriental from 2011 until his assassination in 2023. He was unseated from the post following the results of the May 2022 local elections but with his opponent’s victory nullified, he was proclaimed as the elected gubernatorial candidate in October of the same year. He was killed in an assault on March 4, 2023 at his residence in Pamplona, Negros Oriental.

Roel Degamo Early Life
He was born in Bonawon in the municipality of Siaton, Negros Oriental on April 29, 1966. He graduated from St. Louis School – Don Bosco in Dumaguete, and earned his college degree from Silliman University in 1989, where he majored in Mechanical Engineering. He took the license examinations in the same year and passed.
Roel Degamo Career
Degamo’s involvement in politics started when he ran and was elected as councilor in the Municipality of Siaton, serving three consecutive terms from 1998 to 2007. He served as president of the Provincial Councilors League (PCL) of Negros Oriental from 2004 to 2007, giving him a seat in the Provincial Board, the Provincial Government’s legislative body. He was also elected as Region VII chairperson, which entitled him to a seat in the National Board of the Philippine Councilor’s League.
Degamo was elected for three consecutive terms: in 2013 (under PDP–Laban), in 2016 (under National Unity Party), and in 2019 (under Nacionalista Party).
Degamo, running under Nacionalista Party, sought re-election in 2022 for a fourth term after the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) controversially allowed him to run despite completing three terms, but lost to Bayawan City mayor Pryde Henry Teves.
Earlier, on December 16, 2021, a COMELEC division granted the petition filed by Degamo declaring another gubernatorial candidate, a certain Ruel Degamo, whose real name is Grego Gaudia, as a nuisance. However, the almost-imitated name (Ruel Degamo) remained on the official ballot pending a final COMELEC en banc ruling by election day. On September 1, 2022, the commission denied the motion for reconsideration filed by Gaudia, upholding its earlier ruling.
On February 14, 2023, the SC en banc dismissed the petitions separately filed by Teves, as well as by Gaudia; thus, the COMELEC’s declaration of Degamo’s victory was affirmed.
