He has served in these capacities for over a dozen years at two of the country’s leading media organizations, Channel NewsAsia (CNA) and Berita Mediacorp.
Unfortunately, in 2018, Riz Sunawan received the devastating news of his diagnosis with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Mr. Asri was a determined individual who, despite the gradual progression of his disease, never lost his spirit. Over time, his condition worsened, and he was eventually confined to a bed. However, this did not deter him from making a positive impact on his community.
In April 2021, he co-founded the MND Association Singapore, with the goal of ensuring that every patient and caregiver affected by Motor Neurone Disease (MND) can live their lives with dignity, care, and hope. Mr. Asri was also often invited to motivational talks where he would openly share his experiences and struggles with ALS.
Most recently, on December 16th, 2022, he co-wrote a bilingual book titled “My Name is Riz. I have Motor Neurone Disease”. The book was written to raise awareness about MND and also to help defray Mr. Asri’s medical expenses, which were estimated to be around S$3,000 per month.
