With 329 career assists, Pitino was tenth at UMass until Chaz Williams (2011–2014), who played for the Minutemen from 2011–2014, overtook him as the all-time leader.

Notable Pitino teammates include baseball player Mike Flanagan, who later pitched in the major leagues and won the AL Cy Young Award in 1979, and Al Skinner, who later achieved success as a college coach. At the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass), Pitino received his degree in 1974.
