American college basketball coach, Richard Andrew Pitino was born on September 18th, 1952 in New York City in the United States of America.

He served as the team captain for the basketball team at St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, Long Island. At the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Pitino entered in 1970. He was a star point guard for the Minutemen basketball team and had a stated height of 1.83 meters (6 feet 0 inches).

With 329 career assists, Pitino was tenth at UMass until Chaz Williams (2011–2014), who played for the Minutemen from 2011–2014, overtook him as the all-time leader.

Both as a junior and a senior, he was the team leader in assists. The senior’s 168 assists rank as the eighth-best single-season total in the history of the team.

Pitino was a freshman at UMass when future NBA great Julius Erving was in his junior year, which was also his final year there. Despite this, the two never played on the same team since freshmen at the time were not permitted to play varsity basketball.

Notable Pitino teammates include baseball player Mike Flanagan, who later pitched in the major leagues and won the AL Cy Young Award in 1979, and Al Skinner, who later achieved success as a college coach. At the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass), Pitino received his degree in 1974.

In 1996, Pitino guided Kentucky to the NCAA title. The only coach to guide three distinct institutions (Providence, Kentucky, and Louisville) to the Final Four is him.

He was chosen for induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013. Because Pitino failed to exercise proper monitoring during an escort sex scandal at the University of Louisville involving prospects, the NCAA banned him in June 2017 for five games of the 2017–18 season.

Eventually, Louisville’s 2013 national title was also revoked. Pitino was fired by Louisville in September as a consequence of his involvement in a federal probe into payments made to recruits.
