Rick Jeanneret Career
The Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League and their broadcast network, the Sabres Hockey Network, have employed Jeanneret as their play-by-play announcer for 51 years.
He was the NHL’s longest-serving play-by-play commentator, beginning his career with the team on radio during the team’s second season in 1971–72 and retiring after the 2021–22 campaign.
During the 1995–96 season, he switched to television, and in the 1997–98 campaign, he started splitting his time between radio and television play-by-play. Within the Sabres organization and among his close friends, he is referred to as “RJ”.
In addition to his eerie likeness to the late comedian Rodney Dangerfield, he was renowned for his animated delivery (particularly during significant plays and fights), vivid player nicknames, passionate goal calls, and his characteristic suspenders worn on television.
From 1971–72 to 2021–22, Jeanneret introduced each Sabres season. Ted Darling called the first season in its entirety on the radio, and Dave Hodge, who was then unknown and later left to host Hockey Night in Canada, did so for seven games on television.
Before Jim Lorentz retired, Jeanneret worked with him for more than 20 years. Through the 2011–12 season, Harry Neale, a former color commentator for the regional broadcasts of the Toronto Maple Leafs and a commentator on Hockey Night in Canada until the end of the 2006–07 season, worked with Jeanneret.
For five years, he and Neale worked as ice-level reporters alongside former Sabres enforcer Rob Ray, who occasionally alternated with Martin Biron as Jeanneret’s colleague for the MSG Network and WGR.
On November 8, 2011, Jeanneret and former Sabre Dale Hawerchuk were inducted into the Buffalo Sabres Hall of Fame. The Sabres declared Jeanneret would be inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame on June 6, 2012.
The Sabres revealed on June 8, 2012, that Jeanneret would receive the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award and so become a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame. On November 12, 2012, he was admitted.
On September 20, 2012, Jeanneret was admitted into the Buffalo Broadcasting Hall of Fame. On July 7, 2018, the Bare Knuckle Boxing Hall of Fame honored Jeanneret as a “honorary inductee” on the basis of his blow-by-blow commentary of video game battles, which the Hall’s committee deemed to be the most contemporary version of bare-knuckle boxing.
