At the Antwerp Open in April 1997, Burnett made his PDC debut. At the Battle of the Champions card at the Circus Tavern in June 1997, which was covered by Sky Sports, Burnett competed in a challenge match against PDC World Champion Phil Taylor.
Burnett participated in the World Matchplay once again in 1999, losing to future finalist Peter Manley in the first round, and once more in 2000, making it all the way to the semifinals for the first time since 1997, losing to eventual champion Phil Taylor.
Burnett has never able to duplicate his performance levels from the PDC World Matchplay or the BDO at the PDC World Championships.
His only television appearances between 2005 and 2010 were in the UK Open, with the exception of his run in the 2007 PDC World Darts Championship qualification rounds, where he won four matches to get to the televised stages. This resulted in several years of poor form and declining world rankings.
