Raymond Dokpesi was born on October 25, 1951, in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. He hails from Agenebode, Edo State, Nigeria. He obtained his secondary education at the Baptist Academy in Lagos before attending the University of Göttingen in Germany, where he studied Urban and Regional Planning. He later obtained a Ph.D. in Marine Estuarine Environmental Management from the University of Giessen, Germany.

Dr. Raymond Dokpesi started as the personal assistant to Alhaji Bamaga Tukur one of the general managers of the Nigerian Ports Authority. Dokpesi also served as a civil servant in the Federal Ministry of Transport under Alhaji Umaru Dikko and General Garba Wushishi. The association of Raymond Dokpesi with the likes of the Tukurs and the late Abiola resulted in the birth of African Ocean Lines (AOL).

Dokpesi is known for his contributions to the media industry in Nigeria. In 1996, he founded DAAR Communications Plc., the parent company of AIT and Raypower FM, a radio station. Under his leadership, AIT became one of Nigeria’s leading television networks, providing news, entertainment, and other programming to a wide audience.

Raymond Dokpesi has been involved in Nigerian politics as well. He contested for the position of National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2014 but was unsuccessful in his bid.

Dokpesi had received awards to his credit on behalf of DAAR Communications Plc and had been conferred titles from his hometown in appreciation of his tremendous efforts towards Nigeria. Raymond Dokpesi was married to Tosin Dokpesi. In 2020, Dokpesi and members of his family were hospitalized at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital after they were diagnosed with COVID-19.

Dokpesi and two of his grandchildren were discharged on 14 May 2020 after they all tested negative for remains of COVID-19. At the time of this discharge, however, Dokpesi’s son Raymond Jr. and other family members were still receiving treatment.
