Prof. Kayode Oyebode Adebowale FRSC was born 11 January 1962 to the family of Mr. and Mrs. Adebowale Esuruoso. He is a Nigerian scientist and the 13th Vice-chancellor of the University of Ibadan.

He had his primary education between 1967 and 1972 at St. Marks Primary School, Oke-Ijaga, Ijebu-Igbo while his secondary education was at Ayedaade Grammar School, Ikire between 1973 and 1978.

He completed his BSc, MSc and PhD programmes at the University of Ibadan.

He obtained a B.Sc degree in Chemistry in June 1984; M.Sc degree in Industrial Chemistry in September, 1985 and Ph.D in Industrial Chemistry in October, 1991.

He became a Professor of Industrial Chemistry in 2006.

Adebowale had postdoctoral experience at the Eberhard Karls University, Tuebingen, Germany and the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Italy.

Professor Adebowale’s working career started at the University of Ibadan as a Graduate Assistant between 1987 and 1991. He was appointed Lecturer II at the Federal University of Technology, Akure in October, 1991, where he was promoted to the grades of Lecturer I in 1994 and Senior Lecturer in 1997. He transferred his services to the University of Ibadan in February 1999 as a Senior Lecturer and was subsequently elevated to the grades of Reader in 2003 and Professor in October 2006.

Professor Adebowale held many administrative positions and served on several Committees of the University of Ibadan. These include Examinations Officer, Department of Chemistry, 2003-2005; Postgraduate Coordinator, Department of Chemistry, 2000 – 2002; Sub-Dean (Postgraduate), Faculty of Science, 2002-2004; Dean, Faculty of Science, 2009-2011; Member, Committee of Provosts and Deans, 2009-2011; Member Committee on the Appointment of Emeritus Professors, 2012 to date. He was Convener, Investigative Panel on the Determination of the Class of Degree of two students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Technology, 2013 and the Director, Special Duties, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, between 2015 and 2016.

The new Deputy Vice-Chancellor has won several accolades which include Fellow, Nigeria Academy of Science, Polymer institute of Nigeria, Chemical Society of Nigeria, Science Association of Nigeria, Fellow Royal Society of Chemistry, Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung and African Academy of Science.

Adebowale has published widely in national and international Journals of repute and has served as external examiners in Nigeria and beyond.

He has published over 130 research articles and a national patent.

On the Google scholar, he has an H-index of 40; On Scopus an H-index of 35. He has mentored several Bachelors, Masters, and fourteen Doctoral students who are distinguished scholars in their respective institutions in Nigeria and abroad.

He won a research grant from the International Foundation for Science IFS, Sweden. He is also a recipient of the prestigious 2013 African Union Kwame Nkrumah Continental Scientific Award in Science, Technology and Innovation.

Adebowale has attended the Senior Executive Course 39 of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies leading to the award of Member of National Institute, mni.

He is on the International Scientific Advisory Board of the African Centre of Excellence for Water and Environmental Research (ACEWATER).

Adebowale is currently involved with the Nigerian Young Academy, where he supports two national awards for young scientists one of which is for distinguished young women in Chemical Sciences research.

In October 2021 he became the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, having formerly served as the deputy vice-chancellor (administration) of the University of Ibadan, and as the dean of the faculty of science in same institution.
