Peter Obi: How We Intend To End Incessant ASUU Strike

The presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has said incessant strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will end with his administration.

He stated this in Jalingo, Taraba while highlighting that so far ASUU has embarked on no fewer than 50 months industrial action since 1999.

Obi said he will ensure that paralysis of academic activities would be a thing of the past if given the mandate to lead Nigeria.

According to the former governor of Anambra, his government would dialogue with ASUU leadership to ensure that universities stay open during academic years.

The LP candidate said; “The 50 months ASUU strike in Nigeria is a setback for both the development of Nigeria and its educational system.

“What Datti and I want to do for Nigeria is to ensure that we move from consumption to production and there would be no more ASUU strike.”

He also vowed to make Taraba an economic hub and tourist attraction through the numerous untapped natural resources.

“The untapped mineral resources here and the Mambilla hydro is enough to transform the economy of the country and create job opportunities for Nigerian youths”, he said.

Meanwhile, Obi had earlier made similar promise while speaking at a campaign rally in Owerri, Imo State.

He said; “If you make me your president and Datti my vice, ASUU won’t go on strike. We will dialogue with them. We will work with the students. The future of any serious country is dependent on their education and health sectors. I will invest hugely in those sectors if you elect us.

“We want to go back to Agriculture. That is why we want to turn Nigeria from consumption to production. We will create jobs and export, export and export.

“I and Datti are not corrupt. Our records are clean. Datti was a senator and I was a governor in Anambra. If you want to check my record, go to Anambra State and verify.

As the governor of Anambra state I didn’t allocate a plot of land to myself, my wife here or my children. If you see any land I allocated to myself or any member of my family I will quit from this race”.
