The killing of Deborah in the north for making a blasphemous statement is supposed to wake us up and make us wiser in our choice of words when we speak, there is the power of both life and death in the tongue, and the tongue can start wars just by somebody making some careless utterances and make innocent people lose their lives for no reason and no fault of theirs.
Let us not be hypocrites here, a lot of people are ready to die and fight to protect their parents or family if they feel threatened, or if anyone insults or disrespects them, how much more of someone whom you have total faith and believe in with all your heart for your salvation? people don’t joke with their beliefs and everybody approaches matters of their faith differently, let us learn to respect each other’s faith and not make a mockery of it.
I can’t help but imagine; what if Deborah was at home with her parents when she made those remarks? Maybe she and her innocent parents and siblings would have been burnt alive because she could not control her mouth, she knows the conscience of her actions, she is not a stranger to the north and the Muslims, and she can not say she is ignorant of how sacred the prophet Mohammed (PBUH) is to the Islamic faith.
I am not justifying what happened to her, I am just saying we should all learn our lessons from what happened and become wiser in our dealings with sensitive matters, and know when to draw the line when we speak, there is nothing better than self-control and being mindful of your environment, may God help us all and also give her family the fortitude to bear the loss, amen.
