Nigerians react as 45-year-old civil servant emerges NANS president

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has elected Sunday Asefon as its new President amid a convention that was characterized by chaos and violence in Abuja.

The convention held on Thursday, December 3 at the old parade ground in the Federal Capital Territory.

Asefon, a civil servant with the Ekiti State Government, got 155 votes to defeat his closest opponent, Olushola Oladoja, who scored 100 votes.

The 45-year old, said to be a Postgraduate student of Ekiti State University, replaces Bamidele Akpan.

The new NANS president was Federation of Ekiti State Students’ Union (FESSU’s) National President in 2010 and the NANS Zone D Coordinator in 2013.

His emergence has been received with heavy criticism on social media as many are of the opinion that a student body should be headed by a ‘really young person‘.
