NAFDAC Closes Eatery in Abuja Due to Poor Hygiene Practices

On Thursday, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) shut down an eatery in the Federal Capital Territory due to insufficient adherence to Good Hygiene Practices.

The agency also seized food raw materials suspected to be contaminated with rodent feces, citing inappropriate packaging as a significant concern.

Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, Head of NAFDAC’s FCT Directorate, revealed that the enforcement action was prompted by a customer tip-off and an order from Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye.

Azikiwe emphasized that the operation was part of NAFDAC’s commitment to promoting public health and ensuring that Nigerian citizens have access to safe, quality food.

He reiterated that the agency is responsible for overseeing manufacturing, distribution, and compliance with food safety regulations.

All restaurants, he stated, must adhere to NAFDAC’s Food Hygiene Regulations to guarantee safe and high-quality food processing.

Azikiwe added that the agency would impose penalties on the eatery based on its regulations regarding hygiene failures. “Before applying any penalties, NAFDAC will evaluate the establishment’s premises, staff, facilities, and sources of raw materials,” he noted.

He encouraged other restaurant operators in the FCT to secure NAFDAC’s food hygiene documentation and certification, underscoring the ongoing evaluations and advantages provided by the agency.

Azikiwe advised restaurant operators to visit NAFDAC’s office or their website (www.nafdac.gov.ng) for safety guidelines and further information.
