After relocating to Longview, Texas, in 1980, McConaughey went on to enroll at Longview High School. He traveled to Australia in 1988 with the intention of attending a high school in Sydney.
As a Rotary Youth Exchange student, he spent a year living in Warnervale, New South Wales, where he attended Gorokan High School and worked as a bank teller for ANZ and an attorney’s assistant.
He enrolled in the University of Texas at Austin (UT-Austin), where he became a member of the fraternity Delta Tau Delta. He started in the fall of 1989 and finished with a Bachelor of Science in Radio-Television-Film in the spring of 1993.
Prior to learning that private school tuition would have put a strain on the family’s resources, one of his brothers, he had originally planned to attend Southern Methodist University.
After graduating from college, he had intended to enroll in law school, but he soon realized that he had no interest in practicing law.

In a supporting part in the coming-of-age comedy Dazed and Confused, McConaughey made his acting debut (1993). His first triumph as a leading actor came in the legal drama A Time to Kill after playing a number of supporting roles (1996).
His acting career advanced with leading parts in the military movie U-571, the historical drama Amistad, and the science fiction movie Contact all released in 1997. (2000).
As a result of his roles in romantic comedies such as The Wedding Planner (2001), How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), Failure to Launch (2006), Fool’s Gold (2008), and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009), McConaughey rose to fame in the 2000s and became a sex icon.
