In 1996, Patricia started working as a graduate assistant coach at RPI. The following two years were spent in East Syracuse, New York, working as an application engineer with Hoffman Air & Filtration Systems.

Patricia turned down a job offer from Westinghouse Electric Company to maintain nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers after graduating, choosing instead to coach Amherst College’s defensive line from 1999 to 2000.

He relocated to Syracuse University in 2001 and spent three seasons there as the team’s offensive graduate assistant.

In 2004, Patricia became an offensive coaching assistant for the Patriots, who were led by head coach Bill Belichick, and helped the team win its third Super Bowl in Super Bowl XXXIX.

Patricia was moved to the Patriots as the assistant offensive line coach in 2005 following the resignation of assistant offensive line/tight ends coach Jeff Davidson. Patricia was again reassigned, this time to linebackers coach for the 2006 campaign, after then-linebackers coach Dean Pees was elevated to defensive coordinator following the season.

In 2011, Patricia was appointed as the team’s coach for safeties. He was elevated to the position of defensive coordinator in 2012, but he had been calling defensive plays ever since Pees left after the 2009 campaign.

Patricia was allowed to interview for the Cleveland Browns head coaching post in January 2016, although she would still be the Patriots’ defensive coordinator for the 2016 campaign.

Super Bowl XXXIX at the end of the 2004 season, Super Bowl XLIX at the end of the 2014 season, and Super Bowl LI at the end of the 2016 season were the three Super Bowls that the Patriots won while Patricia was on the team.

Patricia was reportedly the focus of head coaching searches by the Detroit Lions and the New York Giants on January 1, 2018 (NFL Black Monday). He is the most recent defensive play-caller to be named defensive coordinator by the Patriots.

Patricia was appointed head coach of the Detroit Lions on February 5, 2018. In his first two games of the 2018 season, he was defeated 48–17 by the New York Jets on Monday Night Football and 30–27 by the San Francisco 49ers the following week on September 16.

The Lions dismissed Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn on November 28, 2020. This followed a great deal of criticism over Patricia’s skills.

Patricia was expected to rejoin the Patriots “in a variety of roles” on January 22, 2021. Although the precise positions were not disclosed, it is said that Patricia and Patriots coach Bill Belichick are figuring out a function that is akin to Mike Lombardi’s in New England, albeit it is still early in the process.

Patricia started working for the Philadelphia Eagles as a senior defensive assistant on April 20, 2023. After the Eagles suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season on December 17, 2023, and their defense let up 42 and 33 points, head coach Nick Sirianni revealed that Patricia will take over as the team’s defensive playcaller in lieu of Sean Desai.
