Born in Alberta, Canada, Lorna Slater moved to Scotland in 2000 and worked as a renewable energy engineer. She is politically involved with the Scottish Green Party and she ran for the Scottish General Election in 2016, but she failed to win a seat.
In 2019, Lorna Slater replaced Maggie Chapman as co-leader of the Scottish Green Party in the election. In 2018, she was one of three women from Scotland who qualified to participate in the Homeward Bound International Leadership Development Programme. This included a trip to Antarctica the following year to study the effects of climate change. Lorna Slater became politically involved in the run-up to the 2014 Scottish independence referendum, in which she advocated Scottish independence.
Lorna Slater was a multiple candidate for the Scottish Green Party. In the 2016 Scottish general election she voted third on the Lothian list for the party, and in the 2017 general election she was one of only three candidates fielded by the Scottish Green Party.
In April 2019, she came second in the Leithwalk Borough of Edinburgh City Council by-election with 25.5 per cent of the first priority vote. She was co-organizer of the Scottish Greens Steering Committee when she was second on the list of Scottish Greens candidates in the 2019 European Parliament elections. In 2019, Lorna Slater also placed third on the list of Lothian Greens. Allison Johnston got 191 first votes, Andy Wightman got 133 and Slater got 36.
On 30 August 2021, Lorna Slater was appointed Under Secretary for Green Skills, Circular Economy and Biodiversity to the Scottish Government. She and Harvey were the first Green Party politicians to hold government office in Scottish and British political history.
