Lex Veldhuis’ Career
Veldhuis started out as a competitive gamer. He was a keen player of Blizzard Entertainment’s real-time strategy desktop PC game, StarCraft, which is based on a galaxy’s battle for dominance in the 26th century. Veldhuis specialised in expansion set release StarCraft: Brood War. It was through playing this game that he was introduced to the world of online poker.
Veldhuis was studying at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam and sampled online poker games around the dawn of the online poker boom. He started out playing micro-stakes cash games and never looked back, inspired by the strategy involved for players to rise through the different levels of the game.
Since 2009, Veldhuis has been an ambassador for PokerStars, having plied his trade online with this poker room from the outset. He remains a member of Team PokerStars today and is one of the most recognisable personalities in the team, largely due to his presence as a live streamer on the Twitch platform.
In 2020, Veldhuis demonstrated the huge potential in live streamed poker games online, attracting an average of 58,789 live viewers of his deep run within the Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP). He has become an icon for online poker enthusiasts, as well as those completely new to the game and looking to learn the ropes from a proven pro, for the best part of two decades.
Looking at Veldhuis’ live poker career, the Dutchman has posted some notable returns, especially at the World Series of Poker (WSOP). The WSOP is one of the elite events on the poker calendar, attracting high-rolling celebrities as well as poker pros, including the likes of comedian and Hollywood actor Ray Romano, who regularly frequents the Main Event. In May 2009, Veldhuis entered the 40th Anniversary Event of the WSOP, finishing seventh and taking home a cool $277,939. Two years later, Veldhuis almost final-tabled in another No Limit Texas Hold’em WSOP event, taking home over $28,000 in 11th place.
Earlier this year, Veldhuis appeared at the Paris leg of the European Poker Tour (EPT). He entered the High Roller event, finishing 84th. A few days later, he entered the Mystery Bounty event, taking home just over $10,000 in 19th place.
In November 2016, Veldhuis was inducted into the Dutch Poker Hall of Fame, with officials citing his efforts in the game and his promotion of the craft to the next generation of players as reasons why.
