Kiri Allan Career

Following her electoral victories, Allan assumed various ministerial roles from 2020 onwards, including the position of Minister of Justice from June 2022 to July 2023. However, in June 2023, concerns arose regarding how Allan treated her staff, leading to her receiving coaching to foster a positive work environment.

Later in July 2023, she was involved in a driving incident where her vehicle collided with another, resulting in police issuing her an infringement notice for exceeding the legal breath alcohol limit. Additionally, she was charged with refusing to accompany a police officer and careless driving. In the aftermath of this incident, Allan took responsibility for her actions and resigned from all her ministerial positions.

Kiri Allan’s journey to politics began with a diverse background. She spent some of her early years at Auckland Girls’ Grammar in the reo-Māori unit known as Kahurangi. Leaving high school at 16, she started working at a KFC franchise in West Auckland, where she also became a member of the Service & Food Workers Union. At 17, she ventured south and worked as a cherry picker in Blenheim.

Her pursuit of higher education led her to enroll at Victoria University of Wellington, where she studied law and politics and joined the Labour Party. During her university days, she even interned with Prime Minister Helen Clark. After completing her law degree, she gained experience as a judge’s clerk and later worked at the law firm ChenPalmer for two years. Subsequently, she joined Kahui Legal, a law firm specializing in issues related to Māori development in Whakatāne. Her passion for public service eventually led her to stand as the Labour candidate for the East Coast in 2017.

Beyond her political career, Kiri Allan faced personal challenges. However, she triumphed over her health battle and announced in December 2021 that she was cancer-free, encouraging others to undergo regular cancer screenings.

In her personal life, Kiri Allan became engaged to RNZ National presenter Māni Dunlop in 2022, but they separated in 2023. In June 2023, Allan took another leave from Parliament following the breakup, further navigating her personal difficulties.

Amid the turmoil, Kiri Allan’s commitment to her political duties and recognition of her responsibilities came to the forefront. On multiple occasions, she took leave from Parliament to address concerns raised by public servants about her management style and her relationships with her staff. Finally, in July 2023, she decided to resign from her Cabinet portfolios, acknowledging that the personal challenges she faced made it difficult to balance with the demands of being a Minister.
