Midway through the 1980s, Sorbo worked as a model for print ads and toured throughout Europe and Australia for television commercials.

He had made nearly 150 commercial appearances by the beginning of the 1990s. He starred in several well-known advertisements, including one for Jim Beam bourbon whiskey, which became famous for Sorbo’s slogan, “This ain’t Jim Beam.”

During this time, he occasionally got acting jobs, and in 1986, he made his acting debut in an episode of the soap opera Santa Barbara. This was followed by cameos in TV shows like The Commish, Murder She Wrote, and 1st & Ten.

He starred in the 1992 television film Condition: Critical, a failed pilot for the medical drama series that was never taken up.

He was a potential candidate for the role of Superman in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman but lost out to Dean Cain. He was also a potential candidate for the role of Fox Mulder in The X-Files but lost out to David Duchovny.

He made his acting debut in 1993’s Slaughter of the Innocents when he played a supporting role. Later that same year, as part of Universal Television’s Action Pack, Sorbo landed his first major leading role as the mythical Greek hero Hercules in a run of five television movies.

The popular spin-off series Xena: Warrior Princess, starring Lucy Lawless, who made her television debut in a three-episode storyline in the first season of Hercules, was created as a result of the show’s success.

In Kull the Conqueror (1997), Sorbo played his first major cinematic role in between seasons as Hercules. Sorbo starred as Captain Dylan Hunt in the science fiction drama series Andromeda from 2000 to 2005 when Hercules ended.

He was in The O.C.’s last season in 2006 and guest acted in the comedy Two and a Half Men. He appeared in the 2007 direct-to-video movie Walking Tall: The Payback, a follow-up to the 2004 movie Walking Tall.

The 2012 movie Abel’s Field starred and was executive produced by Sorbo. She played a significant part in the 2011 movie Soul Surfer.

Sorbo and his wife Sam recorded the voices for several characters in the computer game Cloudberry Kingdom in July 2013. Sorbo co-starred in the 2014 Christian movie God’s Not Dead as an atheist college lecturer who demands that his students renounce their faith on the first day of class. He provided the voices for Retro Hercules in Smite and Crusher in the Skylanders series.

Sorbo starred as wizard Gojun Pye in a run of five Mythica sword-and-sorcery fantasy movies from 2014 to 2016.

On the CW show Supergirl in 2017, Sorbo played the tragic King Lar Gand of Daxam. Teri Hatcher played his wife Queen Rhea. They were almost cast alongside one another in Lois and Clark 24 years earlier, but Sorbo lost out to Dean Cain.

Despite appearing in the same series, Cain did not appear alongside them in any of the sequences. He also produced and featured in the Christian play Let There Be Light that same year. He will star in the 2023 biopic of Ronald Reagan opposite Dennis Quaid in the lead role.
