While running routes during Cal’s Pro Day, Allen did not participate in the NFL Scouting Combine due to a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) sprain he suffered during the 2012 season.

Prognosticators predicted that Keenan Allen will be selected in the second half of the first round, calling him one of the top receivers available in the 2013 NFL draft.

In front of several scouts and reporters on April 9, 2013, Allen participated in his own pro day and demonstrated his route-running and catching prowess.

Owing to the previously reported PCL sprain, he was not running at his best, which resulted in a 40-yard dash time of 4.71 seconds. On the big day, Allen stated that his health was just 80%. His anticipated draft position dropped as a result.

The San Diego Chargers selected Allen in the third round of the 2013 NFL draft, 76th overall, even though the team has plenty of wide receiver depth at the position.

Since 2008, he was the most highly selected wide receiver out of Cal, behind DeSean Jackson. Tom Telesco, the general manager, had been keeping an eye on Allen for some time.

Attending Cal vs. USC in 2011 at AT&T Park in San Francisco, Telesco saw Allen have one of his best games ever that night, hauling in a career-high 13 passes for 160 yards.

Allen agreed to a four-year, $2.81 million contract with the Chargers on May 9, 2013, which came with a $613,800 signing bonus.

The following week, Allen had two receptions for 16 yards after struggling to get open the whole game. But in a losing effort against the Minnesota Vikings the next week, Allen grabbed both of the Chargers’ touchdowns and finished with 12 receptions for 133 yards.

Allen has four receptions for 72 yards and a spectacular touchdown grab against the Cleveland Browns. The Chargers declared on November 3 that Allen would miss the remainder of the season due to a kidney injury.

He totaled 67 receptions for 725 receiving yards and four touchdowns by the end of the 2015 campaign. Allen and the Chargers reached a four-year, $45 million contract extension on June 10, 2016.

With less than two minutes remaining in the first half of the 2016 season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs, Allen was carried off the field due to pain. After receiving an injury to the ACL diagnosis, he was sidelined for the remainder of the campaign.

After recovering from his injury, Allen played in Monday Night Football’s season opener against the Broncos on September 11, 2017, hauling in five receptions for 35 yards and a touchdown in the team’s 24–21 defeat.

Against the Chiefs, Allen opened the season with eight receptions for 108 yards and a score. He caught six passes for 124 yards against the Seattle Seahawks on November 4.

In the Chargers’ 28–24 victory in Week 3 over the Minnesota Vikings, Allen ended with 18 receptions for 215 receiving yards and one pass to wide receiver Mike Williams for a 49-yard touchdown.
