The Mansfield Police Department is requesting prayers following the deaths of firefighter Justin Sanders and a police officer who were both injured by drunk drivers on Saturday morning.
How Did Justin Sanders Die?
A fatal vehicle collision occurred on Business Route 60, just south of U.S. 60 in Mansfield, leaving one Mansfield fireman dead and one Mansfield police officer seriously wounded.
Justin Sanders, age 31, of Mansfield, Missouri, and Officer Michael Bryson, age 39, of Hartville, was named as the victims.
Justin Sanders, a fireman from Mansfield, died as a result of injuries he sustained in the collision. Mercy Emergency Medical Services shared the devastating news on Facebook,
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Wright County EMT Justin Sanders, Radio Number 573.”

Justin Sanders Cause of Death

The pair were “far off the roadway” when they were struck on the side by the motorist, according to the department’s Facebook post.
A Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report states that the collision took place near Mansfield just south of U.S. Highway 60 around 12:45 a.m. on Saturday. About 12:45 a.m. on April 1, Kody Skaggs, 21, of Mansfield was operating a 2007 GMC Sierra southbound on Business 60 when it crossed the center line and veered off to the left. Then it struck a 2020 Ford F150 being driven by Hartville, Tennessee, officer Michael Bryson, 39, that was parked far from the road.
Officer Michale Bryson, 39, and Fireman Justin Sanders, 31, were parked on the side of the road when a pickup truck’s driver crossed the center line and struck them. Sanders, who was in the backseat, passed away at the scene. Officer Bryson was sent to a hospital in Springfield in critical condition.
Skaggs sought medical attention despite just having minor wounds. It was alleged that Skaggs wasn’t wearing a safety device. Both Sanders and Bryson were reportedly wearing safety equipment. Sanders also held a radio license for 573 and served as an EMT for Wright County.
Sanders was taking part in a ride-along when the accident occurred, according to a Facebook post from Mercy Emergency Medical Services.
The MSHP arrested Skaggs around 1:18 in the morning and accused him of felony first-degree assault, careless and dangerous driving, and not using a seatbelt while drunk. He was placed in the Wright County Jail on a 24-hour hold.
