Local cycling club Thy Cykle Ring set up a home trainer at the event so spectators could experience cycling up a mountain. He then joined the club and began competing in his first races.
Prior to joining the Aalborg Cykle Ring in 2013, he cycled for five seasons with the Thy Cykle Ring. In 2014, Vingegaard's final year competing as a junior rider, he joined Odder Cykel Klub. As a senior rider, he first had trouble and had bad results in competitions.
Results for him improved once Odder Cykel Club created a U23 squad at the beginning of 2016. He placed third in a race in Aalborg in the spring, and in May he won a segment of the Pinse Cuppen in Hammel, where the riders had to repeatedly climb the renowned local hill Pt Mlle.
He started as a youth rider for various Danish teams, making his breakthrough as a senior rider as part of the UCI Continental team ColoQuick–Cult in 2016. He was known as a physical specimen and broke records in climbs, but still lacked major results on the road.
As part of Team Jumbo–Visma, which he joined in 2019, he impressed at the Tour de Pologne and rode as a domestique for Primož Roglič at the Vuelta a España. Tom Dumoulin was replaced by Vingegaard in the team's Tour de France lineup in April 2021.
Vingegaard initially competed in the Tour as a domestique for Rogli, one of the top favourites for the overall classification.
Rogli crashed and later withdrew, leaving Vingegaard as the lone general classification candidate for the team. After attacking Mont Ventoux, where he eliminated eventual race winner Tadej Pogaar and came in second overall, he attracted attention from all around the world.
