John Garrett Career

Garrett was originally chosen by the St. Louis Blues in the first round of the 1971 NHL Entry Draft.

He spent one season with the Blues CHL affiliate before spending half a se ason with the Portland Buckaroos of the WHL and finally joining the Richmond Robins of the AHL.

In 1973–74, he signed a contract with the World Hockey Association's Minnesota Fighting Saints. He would continue to play with the Fighting Saints until their dissolution on February 25, 1976.

He later got a contract with the Toronto Toros and would move to Birmingham to join the Toros franchise. Garrett was acquired by the New England Whalers during the final WHA season and stayed with the team when it made its NHL debut.

He currently owns the WHA goaltender record for most losses suffered by any goalie. Prior to his retirement at the start of the 1985–86 NHL season, Garrett previously played for the NHL's Québec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks.

Garrett was a part of one of the most peculiar situations in NHL All-Star Game history. Before the game's conclusion, John Garrett was chosen as the contest's MVP, taking the place of an injured Richard Brodeur, who was the only representative of the Vancouver Canucks in the 1983 All-Star game.

Wayne Gretzky was chosen the All-Star Game MVP following a re-vote after scoring four goals in the final 10 minutes.

Garrett stepped down prior to the 1985–86 campaign. When Harry Neale, the Canucks' general manager, was sacked, the offer to be the assistant general manager was rescinded.

In a few years, the team began to view him as a valuable player, and in 1991, he was given his first of eight consecutive conference final assignments. Along with Bruce Buchanan, he served as the primary color analyst for the Edmonton Oilers' local telecasts during that time.

In 1998, he left CBC to work for the nascent CTV Sportsnet (now Rogers Sportsnet). He worked as a studio analyst for national broadcasts and as the color analyst for Sportsnet West's coverage of Calgary Flames games.

He briefly worked in Vancouver, British Columbia, for United Parcel Service of Canada during the NHL lockout of 1994.

During the 2002–03 season, Garrett has been Sportsnet Pacific's color analyst for Canucks games, first working alongside Jim Hughson and then John Shorthouse.

Moreover, he occasionally had network jobs on Sportsnet or City after Rogers bought the NHL's Canadian national contract in 2014. He also occasionally received network assignments on HNIC.

At the end of the 2022–2023 NHL season, Garrett announced his departure from Canucks regional broadcasts on March 23, 2023.
