Mason Rudolph Career

Rudolph participated in most of the combined drills while at the NFL Scouting Combine; however, he chose not to participate in the bench press, broad jump, short shuttle, or three-cone drill.

He took part in Oklahoma State’s pro day on March 15, 2018, when he ran passing drills, the three-cone drill, the short shuttle, and the broad jump.

After his pro day, he had private meetings with scouts and representatives of the Los Angeles Chargers, New York Giants, and Pittsburgh Steelers.

He visited and participated in private workouts with the Buffalo Bills, New Orleans Saints, Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots, Steelers, New York Giants, and Chargers.

Rudolph was predicted by most NFL draft experts and scouts to be a second round selection at the end of the pre-draft process. Scouts Inc., Sports Illustrated, and DraftScout.com all listed him as the sixth-best quarterback prospect in the draft.

Rudolph was chosen by the Steelers in the 76th overall pick of the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft. The Pittsburgh Steelers gained three spots in the draft and selected Rudolph with the 76th overall pick by trading their third-round (79th overall) and seventh-round (220th overall) picks to the Seattle Seahawks. Rudolph was the sixth quarterback chosen in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Rudolph was signed by the Steelers on May 23, 2018, to a four-year, $3.92 million contract with a $932,264 signing bonus.

Rudolph faced competition from Joshua Dobbs and Landry Jones during training camp for the backup quarterback position behind Ben Roethlisberger. Rudolph was eventually selected by head coach Mike Tomlin as the third quarterback, with Jones being let go. Throughout the 2018 season, Rudolph did not earn a single snap.

After several strong preseason outings, Rudolph surpassed Dobbs to be selected as the backup quarterback behind Roethlisberger during the preseason.

Rudolph entered the game in the second quarter of Week 9 against the Dallas Cowboys, following Roethlisberger’s visit to the locker room due to an ankle injury.

Rudolph had three yards on two of his three passes before Roethlisberger returned in the second half. In addition, Rudolph entered games in the fourth quarter of lopsided victories over the Browns, Bengals, and Jacksonville Jaguars to relieve quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

In order to rest quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, head coach Mike Tomlin declared on December 29, 2020, that Rudolph would start the season finale against the Browns, with the Steelers already assured of winning the AFC North.

Rudolph completed the game with 315 yards of passing for two touchdowns and an interception in a 24–22 loss on the road.

On April 29, 2021, Rudolph agreed to a one-year contract extension with the Steelers. Rudolph made his season debut in Week 10 against the Detroit Lions, replacing Ben Roethlisberger, who was sidelined due to COVID-19. In the 16–16 draw, Rudolph passed for 242 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

In May 2023, Rudolph agreed to a one-year contract with the Steelers. Rudolph replaced Mitchell Trubisky on December 16 against the Indianapolis Colts in the fourth quarter. He completed two of his three passes for three yards.

After Trubisky’s subpar performance and an injury to Pickett, Rudolph was selected as the starting quarterback for the Steelers’ Week 16 matchup with the Bengals.
