At the age of 18, Leigh was discovered by actress Norma Shearer, who helped her to sign a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, a prominent film studio. From there, Leigh went on to become a well-known and respected figure in the entertainment industry.

Leigh died on October 3, 2004, of vasculitis in Beverly Hills, California, aged 77.
